Recreation Experience Community Network

History of REC Net (Recreation Experience Community Network) Founded in 1981 as the Resort and Commercial Recreation Association (RCRA), REC Net began as a small group of recreation professionals seeking to exchange programming ideas and strengthen their field. What started with informal committees quickly expanded to include educational workshops, program exchange services, a professional directory, and a job fair aimed at attracting student members. Within six months, the association was thriving and capped its first year with the inaugural National Conference at Amelia Island Plantation in Amelia Island, Florida. Over the decades, REC Net has continued to grow in both membership and services, welcoming professionals employed in recreation—particularly within the private sector. Members represent resorts, hotels, sports and membership clubs, campgrounds, theme parks, special event companies, cruise lines, community developments, and colleges and universities. REC Net’s National Conference (held annually each November) and Regional Conference remain cornerstone events, providing valuable opportunities for students seeking internships or entry-level roles, as well as for professionals and educators to network, recruit, collaborate, and recharge. The organization’s success is driven by its engaged membership and guided by an elected Board of Directors, whose mission is to advance the recreation field by supporting professionals, educators, and students while enhancing the efficiency and profitability of member programs. In 2023, REC Net launched a rebrand, officially transitioning from RCRA to the Recreation Experience Community Network in 2024. While the name evolved, the organization’s commitment to its legacy, values, and excellence remains unchanged.
