Growing up in Southern Africa in the 1990s and experiencing the devastating impact that poverty and HIV & AIDS had in his country and in surrounding nations, Rassel Chisango (RYO Visionary and President) answered God`s call to serve humanity and founded a community-based organization, Royal Youth Organisation (RYO) whilst he was still a teenager. The main aim of RYO was to strengthen the capacity of communities and individuals to stand up to deprivation and poverty and motivate and support young people to live out their lives to their full potential, and see the emergence of a generation free from HIV. RYO programming was initially guided by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and zeroed in on the eradication of extreme poverty, ensuring environmental sustainability and global partnership for development. As the challenges have evolved in the last decade, the vision has grown and subsequently resulted in the birth of The RoyalFam, an aid and development trust operating in Africa and based in Zimbabwe, and RYO Globternal, a registered not-for-profit organization based in Australia, both of which make up RYO. The RYO President is based in Australia and has oversight of both the Africa and Australia offices, each of whose operations is led by a local task team. The Trust is primarily dedicated to providing or securing essential services and needs such as housing, food, access to health and education, i.e. the “basics” that any human being needs to grow with dignity and realise their potential and dreams. Going forward, RYO will have an administrative and programmatic presence both in Africa and in Australia, in projects that will be aligned and/or complementary when feasible and necessary, but independent where objectives and contextual factor have no overlaps. Strategic partnerships will be developed and managed at international as well as local levels as deemed necessary.
