Safran Book

In aim to face modern challenges of globalisation, rise of Asian region and at the same time to overcome Ukrainian post-colonial heritage, we created SAFRAN – Ukraine’s only oriental publishing. We create our own editions on Asian culture and publish Ukrainian translations from eastern languages of ancient and contemporary literature from Asia. We work in different genres to give our readers better understanding of Asian societies and cultures. We published first Ukrainian translations of ancient iconic texts like classic Chinese poetry collection, philosophic treatises «Zhuangzi», «The Book of Tea». In our contemporary literature series we highlight Taiwanese literature while publishing prominent Taiwanese writers Sanmao and Wu Ming-yi. We published educational series for children: «Legends of China», «24 Solar Terms» and «Chinese opera». We also create nonfiction editions in different fields: art, religion, linguistic and sociology. We published art edition «The 88 ornaments of kimono», handbook on ornaments that have been used in Japan to decorate fabrics for many centuries and remain common to this day; research on feminist topic «Women emirate. Female politicians of Muslim world»; «Aspects of Jain religion» edition, a handbook of Ukrainian practical transcription of Chinese language etc. Since our foundation, we are constantly introducing Asian culture to domestic readers through the literature we publish. Our audience grows from year to year, and the core of it are young people who are keen on Asia. During the full-scale russian war in Ukraine we see our main mission in continuing to work on the new editions to ensure our readers, that despite the difficult times, we will come back to them with the new books again and again.
