Samohi Theatre

Samohi Theatre seeks to maintain a supportive and creative culture of live theatre on the Santa Monica High School campus. Santa Monica High School Theatre is led by Katheryne "Kate" Barraza. Ms. Soller is in her 6th year at Samohi and her 14th year of teaching, mostly teaching theatre and directing plays in LAUSD and also in Portland, Oregon. She received her B.A. from Evergreen State College and her M.A. from Portland State University, and studied educational theatre at NYU. She has directed musical, comedy, and dramatic theatre, and has written her own work and directed student-devised plays. Samohi Theatre performs in two venues on campus: Barnum Hall, a 1,200-seat WPA landmark in the center of campus, built in 1938 and beautifully renovated in 2004. Humanities Center Theatre, an intimate space with various configurations holding up to 120 people, located near the Michigan/7th Street gate. Students have placed in regional theatre competitions and gained entrance to college theatre programs. More importantly, they gain skills and experience to propel and sustain them in adult life.
