With top end journals charging more than to take up just a few of their precious pages and rejecting 90% of manuscripts, much of the world's knowledge base and thought-provoking ideas are going unseen and the 'lucky' ones sacrifice food and rent to feed the pockets of academic publishers. Many of the top journals have annual profit margins that exceed Google and Coca-Cola. It's no laughing matter that academics donate billions each year in unpaid labour, and that staff and student suicides have become its 'dirty little secret'. We are here to do things very differently because it has become essential. We have two key missions - to open credible research to the public and ensure academics are properly paid.
