Scottish Roads Archive

The Scottish Roads Archive (formerly Glasgow Motorway Archive) is the largest private collection of roads and transportation records in Scotland. An independent organisation managed by volunteers, its aim is to locate, preserve and share these unique artefacts and to promote a wider understanding of the significant civil engineering projects behind them. The Archive was inspired by John M. Cullen (1928-2018), formerly of Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick & Partners, and was made real by the generous donation of his private collection of engineering and technical records. Founded in 2010 with an initial focus on the Glasgow urban motorway system, it has since widened its interest to include all Scottish roads projects of the 20th century. Through its website, the SRA seeks to provide a record of the planning, design, construction and subsequent development of Scotland’s post-war roads system. The social, economic and environmental issues associated with its construction are also considered. The Archive’s work is keenly supported by Transport Scotland, CIHT Scotland and the ICE, and the team works closely with others in the archives and heritage sector such as Historic Environment Scotland and Glasgow City Archives. The GMA participates in regular events such as public talks, academic lectures and the annual Doors Open Days programme. The Scottish Roads Archive is happy to accept donations of new material.
