The oceans are the world’s largest source of untapped energy. The UK is a global leader in the wave/tidal energy sector, both in terms of its natural resources and technical capabilities. Power Technology reported the UK has the potential to access £76bn of the future tidal/wave market with the resulting significant carbon emission reductions and green technology job creation. However, wave energy is far behind in development compared to other renewable energies and is currently not on track to contribute to net zero by 2050. Barriers include high construction, installation and maintenance costs due to challenging conditions in offshore locations. Seaweed Energy Ltd has taken inspiration from seaweed’s motion and its ability to reduce carbon from the atmosphere.
