Sefton Rani Studio

Sefton Rani is a full-time artist working in Auckland, New Zealand. Sefton sees himself as a maker who uses the materiality of paint to investigate his Cook Island heritage. He describes his finished works as "urban tapa" which is influenced by the marks and forms of traditional tapa, carving, tattoo, weaving and tivaevae. This work allows him to explore his "Pacificness" and the relationship of factories to migrant Pacific workers who found themselves in these “industrial plantations” on their arrival in New Zealand. Sefton's work is primarily created with solidified paint skins. His time spent working in a paint factory is a key reason for using this unusual material which in its creation he investigates labour as a material of value.
