The Company was set up to develop and commercialise an innovative telecare product. The concept is based on an immediate warning system that alerts a parent or carer when a disposable diaper has become wet. The product itself consists of a thin water-sensitive electronic strip that attaches to a small, removable, reusable transmitter contained in a pouch in the diaper. The electronic strip is woven into the diaper and is also disposable. When the strip detects moisture, an electronic signal is sent from the transmitter to a small local receiver which in turn sends a pre-definable SMS text message to a designated mobile telephone over an existing cellphone network.(e.g. Vodafone) The text message also contains a unique code which allows the receiver of the message to identify which of a number of individual diapers has become wet. In addition, the base unit can be connected to a PC to provide current status as well as historic data to support analytical reports on usage status patterns. The product was initially aimed at the baby care market with parents identified as consumers. While this market is still considered important, the elderly care sector has been prioritised as the first to be addressed. The product has several benefits for residents and staff within a care home environment where continence management may be included within care plans. By using such a system, care staff would be immediately able to identify when an incontinence pad has become wet, without the need to question a resident, thereby maximising hygiene, reducing the likelihood of pathological skin conditions, minimising the risk of infection and preserving the wearer’s dignity The product is particularly beneficial for people with communication difficulties, including those who have had a stroke and people with dementia who might be unable to alert a carer. This adult incontinence product is called ‘Sensidry’.
