Seva Prison Yoga

SEVA's mission is to bring mindful/trauma conscious yoga to incarcerated populations in Northern Virginia to promote holistic healing, positive connection to self and others, and tools to cope with stress, anger and chaotic environments. To date we have touched over 200 incarcerated female and female inmates with yoga, meditation and breath work in the Fairfax Adult Detention Center. We started the program with one teacher and two classes at one facility. By year end we will have added at least one local facility, several more classes and teachers. SEVA hosts an annual Trauma Informed Yoga Teacher Training Workshop in partnership with the Prison Yoga Project to expand the pool of qualified teachers for these environments so we can continue to offer this program at other facilities. The program also provides mats and props to the facility once a class is established; books and other resources for students as well as the facility library; and yoga kits (mat, block, strap) for recently released inmates who were involved in the program and have interest in continuing their practice.
