I Can Write Online is web-based writing process software for students in first through sixth grade. This software guides chiildren through 4 major modes of writing: narrative, descriptive, expository and persuasive. Oral and written directions, prompts, questions, tips, checklists and hints all give students the support they need to choose their own topics and write texts that are well organized, fluent, rich in ideas and vocabulary and speak to the reader. Multiple ways of publishing and an electronic portfolio are features students particularly like. Research studies have shown the software to be a highly effective writing tool that not only results in more elaborate writing but helps students raise their writing scores on state assessments.
