In 2020, 85% of solid waste in Malaysia was dumped in environmentally unsound disposal methods. 90% of waste are disposed to landfills, while only 10% was recycled. On top of that, 31.9% of waste were disposed by open burning, while 6.5% were dumped into the river system. Through observing the growing amount waste generated from takeaway restaurants, it is of utmost urgency that we create a solution to mitigate and reduce single use takeaway packaging. Alternative eco-friendly containers are very costly and expensive. Therefore, SIKAL is a platform that offers reusable packaging as a service for SME restaurants. SIKAL loans stainless steel container bowls, plates and cups to restaurants and cafes. Each container is labelled with a unique QR code. Restaurants will then use these containers to serve their takeaway meals for diners. The SIKAL mobile application will be used to track usage of each container. Once the takeaway diner completes his or her meal, the diner can choose to arrange for pick up or return their container to any partnering restaurants on the SIKAL platform. Upon returning the container, diners will get rewarded with vouchers of restaurants partnered with SIKAL. Restaurants can then wash, sanitize, and reuse the containers for future takeaway orders. This serves an opportunity for restaurants and businesses to increase business traffic and create loyal diners.
