Silaiwali

SilaiWali, a social enterprise in New Delhi, upcycles waste fabric from the garment manufacturing industry to create cotton handicrafts. They work with Afghan women refugees in India, providing them with training in stitching, embroidery, and crochet work, enabling them to earn sustainable incomes. SilaiWali's spacious building is conveniently located near the homes of these artisans, facilitating easy access to the workplace. The Afghan women and their families sought refuge in India due to persecution from the Taliban and other oppressive regimes. Financial distress is a significant challenge they face, which SilaiWali aims to address. Since its establishment in 2018, SilaiWali has employed over 300 Afghan refugee women, offering them economic empowerment. SilaiWali is a certified Guaranteed Fair Trade Enterprise by the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), adhering strictly to Fair Trade principles. It serves as a symbol of empowerment, reshaping the economic landscape for these women and transforming social norms within their communities. Delhi-NCR is a major hub for the garment manufacturing industry in India, contributing significantly to environmental issues. Approximately 47% of all fibers in the fashion value chain end up as waste. Recognizing this challenge, SilaiWali has pioneered a solution by upcycling textile waste into home decor products. This innovative approach aligns with the principles of a circular economy, aiming to minimize waste and pollution. SilaiWali's efforts have gained recognition through successful collaborations with international fashion brands. They upcycle waste fabric from these brands' garment manufacturing in India, creating unique handicrafts. Notably, SilaiWali's production process has a zero-carbon footprint, making it a frontrunner in the movement towards an environmentally conscious and socially responsible fashion industry.
