Sint Maarten Training Foundation

Sint Maarten Training Foundation (SMTF), an independent, non-profit organization was founded on 22 December 2017 by The Maho Group, Great Bay (Sunwing Travel Group) and their global network of leading hoteliers and industry veterans. With a strong mission to aid in the development of, and further advancements of professional skill sets through integral, structural and educational programs that will enhance career opportunities within Sint Maarten’s hospitality workforce, SMTF operates a training program for employees of businesses affected by Hurricane Irma by providing training opportunities and industry certifications while offering financial support through stipends in order to prevent lay-offs. While SMTF is still a new organization, the core team have proven experience in the hospitality industry, and the curriculum used during the pilot phase was developed prior to Hurricane Irma by The Maho Group. Board members offering their time and expertise pro bono. The program offered during the pilot phase is geared towards the hospitality industry, the largest industry of St. Maarten, and is a continuation of the upgrade program developed for Maho and Great Bay hotels. The curriculum was conceptualized using hospitality standards and principles of the cruise lines and meant to give trainees the opportunity to improve their skill set and further their career opportunities. Courses in this curriculum will be conducted by professionals from the cruise industry or (local) academic advisors trained by them (train the trainer). Administrative assistance will be provided by staff members made available by The Maho Group.
