Six Stages Inclusive Framework

The Six Stages Conceptual Framework is a tool for Understanding and Dealing with Racism was designed as a way of offering support and challenge to individuals and organisations in their fight against racism and other forms of discrimination. This is no ordinary framework and the training provided is no ordinary training. There is an emphasis on experiential learning and engaging in small groups tasks and activities rather than just listening to us speak. The stages are designed to support individuals and organisations to identify where they are in terms of their awareness of understanding and responding to racism. As a society we need to appreciate that we are all at different stages in our journey towards understanding and dealing with racism and promoting a more equitable society which does not discriminate according to one’s race, colour and/or appearance. In supporting individuals and organisations to understand and challenge racism it is important to explore and to be able to identify some of the beliefs, values and behaviours individuals and organisations engage in as they struggle to reformulate their views and challenge their own prejudices. We are currently providing training through support and challenge programmes to EPSs, Local Authorities and other organisations using the Six Stages Conceptual Framework for Understanding and Dealing with Racism. The Framework has been well received as a tool for supporting reflective practice and supporting individuals and teams in their understanding of racism and in coming up with strategies and action plans. We are also carrying out research in Universities on student perceptions and understanding of racism. We also have courses for Non Executive Directors and Chairs of Boards.
