Somerset Multicultural Association

Our aim at the Somerset Multicultural Association, is to bring black and ethnic minorities together in rural and often isolated areas of Somerset. We are a team of professionals, students and parents from varied backgrounds and through local events and education, we will also encourage real change in common mis-held beliefs, stereotypes and unconscious bias that persist in our society and institutions. We can learn from the mistakes of our predecessors and make a better future for all. We will celebrate the differences between us all and commemorate diverse and influential people of colour both past and present. There are so many great historical figures and events missing from the national curriculum but the understanding of these histories is the only way we can move forward and make a better, equal society. We believe that talking about race and culture and creating a positive dialogue between people about it is the only way to fight racism and discrimination and create change, especially in an area with a large majority of white British population like Somerset.
