Using Ultrasound as the key diagnostic tool, doctors are now able to directly examine the veins to determine the presence and source of “reflux” that comes from venous valve incompetency, resulting in more accurate treatment. The new major treatment for venous reflux is Endovascular Therapy which evolved directly from coronary balloon angioplasty. It involves placement of catheters inside blood vessels to close, or ablate, an incompetent vein. The use of lasers is the new endovascular therapy of choice in many instances of venous disease. Lasers have fewer risks and side effects and better long-term results than surgical and chemical options. There are two primary laser treatments available today for veins; Endovenous and Surface Laser Therapy.
