Spartan Drilling LTD was a privately-held Calgary Alberta based drilling company established in 1981 by Alan Gates and his three sons. Mr. Gates’ leadership philosophy of “Service with Integrity” and using the company to build people through an unwavering commitment of employee training and Safety awareness; combined with building one of the most technologically advanced Rig-fleets, resulted in the companies dynamic growth while achieving the highest performance both operationally and in safety; this being evidenced by the CAODC annually awarding Spartan as one of the safest drilling contractors in the country. By 1984 Spartan Energy Corporation had Canadian offices in Calgary, Edmonton and Estevan and US offices and operations in; Sydney MT, Denver CO and Texas offices in Houston, Tyler and Bryan. The Spartan group of company’s consisted of; • Spartan Drilling – Canada and USA – 37 Land Rigs • Spartan Workover Services – USA – 21 Rigs • Spartan Trucking – USA -30 Trucks • Titus Oil & Gas – Canada – E&P • Spartan Personnel – Canada – Contract Labor Services – 200 Employees In 1988 due to Spartan’s strong operational performance, state of the art fleet and excellent people it became the first acquisition by Precision Drilling, Canada’s first publicly-owned drilling contractor and today one of the world’s largest drilling companies.
