Steal A Step

Steal a Step grew out of our desire to stretch the bounds of American contemporary circus and create ephemeral experiences that embody the essence of humanity: free-thinking, yearning, and essentially uncertain. At its root, circus embodies the thrill of chasing one's dreams-a thrill that combines a paralyzing fear of failure with the intoxicating potential for great success. In the United States, contemporary circus has built on customs of the tented circus while fusing it with theatre and dance practice. Our non-linear shows take circus a step further, reaching into postmodern traditions. The audience is an important determiner of our art's meaning and we invite them to throw off their inhibitions, challenge the rules of settled society, and enter the artistic fray. We also view circus as not just a form of art, but also a social instrument representing the fringe of society and a display of the extraordinary potential of the human body as a vehicle for self-empowerment. By using it as our primary tool, we hope to reach marginalized groups and bring people together.
