Streetlights Uganda

Streetlights Uganda is a youth-led, trauma-informed nonprofit based in Kampala that uses art for creative expression and economic opportunity. We use art as a tool for the creative empowerment of children living and working on the streets and vulnerable women to unearth their full potential. Founded in 2014 from a student-led internship,” Streetlights Uganda’s journey began by teaching art and crafts to street-children on the roadside of Kampala City and now reaches the most impoverished parts of Kampala’s outskirts: Bwaise, Soweto, Kibuli, Kirombe, as well as rural areas like Jinja, Hoima and Karamoja. Believing poverty is the root cause of homelessness, Streetlights-Uganda’s work is anchored in three pillars: creative-empowerment of children, creative-entrepreneurial skilling of vulnerable families, and community engagement in child protection through outreach, advocacy, and exhibitions. In 10 years, Streetlights Uganda has reached over 2,500 children, trained 160 women and young mothers through the Ntunga program, hosted 7 art exhibitions, and built 10 national and international partnerships. Streetlights Uganda was built from nothing but purpose and faith.
