Streetwise Karate

Streetwise Karate is born out of a desire to blend the wisdom of the traditional martial arts with the effectiveness of progressive modern combat methods. Streetwise Karate is home to Streetwise Combat Karate, Streetwise Freestyle Karate, Streetwise Kids Karate, Streetwise Physical Intervention, Streetwise Self-defence and Streetwise Weapons Awareness. We provide vocational skills for security personnel, self defence and weapons awareness for adults and children, fighting skills on the mat, in the ring or in the cage for the competitive and structured grading and recognition for the goal driven. Streetwise Karate draws from many influences. The primary influence is Goju Ryu Karate, however cross training has introduced new training methods and techniques. In Streetwise Karate we only practice what is directly related to combat or combat efficiency. Streetwise Freestyle Karate has basic techniques that need to be mastered; strikes (kicking and punching), blocks, footwork (steps and stances), take downs, restraints and submissions. Combination training and pre-arranged sparring allow familiarity with technique, creates muscle memory and builds confidence. Pad work builds power and finally sparring allows for pressure testing of these skills in a controlled environment. Streetwise Combat Karate uses kata (patterns) and their bunkai (applications) as a means to explore and understand violence. Body condition prepares the body for combat and randori (controlled sparring) prepares you for the reality of combat.
