Surdo Prop is a niche real estate and legal advisory firm based in Cape Town, specialising in residential sales and property law across the Southern Suburbs — including Claremont, Kenilworth, Wynberg, Newlands, and Rondebosch. We combine deep legal knowledge with real market insight to provide a more intelligent, transparent, and people-first property experience. Founded in 2023 by Gabriel da Matta, an admitted attorney and registered property practitioner, Surdo Prop was created to offer clients something different: a service grounded in trust, expertise, and purpose. Gabriel brings over eight years of experience in the property industry. Before moving into real estate full-time, he practiced property law for 5 years in Johannesburg gaining valuable legal insight into the intricacies of real estate transactions, contracts, litigation and compliance. I n 2017, he and his wife made the move to Cape Town, where he joined Balwin Properties, a JSE-listed property developer. There, he successfully sold over R400 million worth of off-plan homes in the Paardevlei precinct in Somerset West. In 2019, Gabriel and his family relocated to the Southern Suburbs, where he joined a national property agency and quickly established himself as a market leader — gaining majority market share in his area over a 3.5-year period. However, disillusioned with the traditional agency model and its limited value offering, Gabriel felt the need to create something more meaningful. That vision became Surdo Prop. “Surdo” means Deaf in Portuguese — a tribute to Gabriel’s daughter, who is deaf and a constant source of inspiration. In founding Surdo Prop, Gabriel drew from the concept of Deaf Gain — the belief that Deaf culture brings unique strengths, values, and ways of communicating that enrich the world. These principles — clarity, active listening, deeper connection, and intentional communication — form the foundation of how Surdo Prop engages with clients and the property journey.
