Get More from the Tech You Use Every Day. At SWAT we aim to better understand the devices, software, and apps we use all the time, whether they're on phones, tablets, or computers. We practice and improve our skills in order to sustain connections with our friends, family, community, and the world. We investigate software, apps, websites, and digital tools. We engage with local tech companies whenever we can to receive training, while advocating for our needs, and passing along our insights to innovators and designers. Peer-to-Peer Learning is a Great Way to De-mystify, Explore, and Succeed. Working with a group eases the friction most of us feel when tackling something new. We support each other as we evaluate what technology offers, what it lacks, and how to overcome barriers. Learning is cumulative. The more we engage, the easier it becomes to recognize similarities in the way many interfaces operate. We remain open to change as we experience the rapid advances of the digital age. We stress that each person must decide for herself which devices, apps, and programs are appropriate and helpful tools. SWAT Serves Bridge-Generation Women. We remember a time before there was a PC on every desk, and were swept up in the digital revolution when we were young adults or in mid-career. We convene once a month in Northwest Portland’s Pearl District. The sessions are free and last for 90 minutes. Format and content vary. Hands-on workshops might look at a specific app like Twitter or Facebook, or focus on maintaining passwords and security. Other sessions may examine how technology shapes our culture, or how the industry deals with gender disparity. Group members may lead the session, or guests may be invited to share their expertise.
