Teatro Tivoli Bbva
An important Portuguese businessman at the beginning of the 20th century, a cultured, well-traveled man who loved the Seventh Art wanted to build a cinema on Avenida da Liberdade. Influenced by the European culture of the time, he invited Raúl Lino, one of the most famous and award-winning architects of the time, to design it in a Neoclassical style, similar to the great buildings in Paris. The space added to Avenida da Liberdade the glamorous aura of a Parisian boulevard, a social place of excellence, culture and modernity. In the 70s and 90s, the Tivoli Theater went through several owners. After years of closure, and under threat of demolition to make way for a hotel, it was acquired in December 2011 by UAU, a private national show production company whose aim was to return the Theater to the city of Lisbon. In the last 12 years, several rehabilitation works were carried out, in 2012 and 2018, work that is still ongoing so that Lisbon has a cultural space of excellence.
