Tectonic Theater Project
Based in New York City and guided by founder and artistic director Moisés Kaufman since 1991, Tectonic Theater Project develops new plays using the company’s trademarked theater-making method, Moment Work™, a wholly unique methodology that has resulted in some of the most theatrically thrilling and culturally important American theater of the last two decades. In 2001, the company garnered worldwide acclaim for "The Laramie Project," a theatrical exploration of the events surrounding the 1998 killing of college student Matthew Shepard that is among the most frequently produced plays in the United States. HBO's film adaptation of the play, co-written and directed by Mr. Kaufman, earned four Emmy Award-nominations in 2002. In 2009, President Obama invited the company to witness the signing of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act at the White House, recognizing Tectonic’s contribution to the national dialogue around anti-LGBTQ hate crimes. President Obama awarded Moisés Kaufman the National Medal of Arts in 2016 for “his powerful contributions to American Theater,” and with appreciation for how the company “continues to move audiences with its bold portrayals of contemporary social issues.” Tectonic has also created and staged over twenty other plays and musicals, including "Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde," Doug Wright’s Pulitzer Prize-winning "I Am My Own Wife," and the Tony Award-winning "33 Variations" In 2018, Tectonic published "Moment Work: Tectonic Theater Project's Process of Devising Theater"(with Penguin Random House), which serves as both a teaching tool and an invitation into their artistic vision. Tectonic Theater Project is home to the Moment Work Institute, a training ground for theater artists, students, and teachers for mastering the most innovative and collaborative paths to creating new work for the stage.
