The Aftertone
The Aftertone is a Washington, DC-based music publication dedicated to immersive, narrative-driven coverage of live music across the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia). Founded in 2025 by writer Rahal Wijewardene and photographer Jonathan Nevius, The Aftertone was born out of a shared passion for concerts and storytelling. Rather than offering traditional concert reviews or album rankings, The Aftertone focuses on the full experience of live shows. From the energy of the crowd and the vibe of the venue, to the emotional and historical weight of the performance, our goal is to transport you there with us. A Different Approach to Music Journalism At The Aftertone, the narrative comes first. Drawing inspiration from Gonzo journalism and the first-person storytelling of the 1960s and ’70s, we aim to capture the raw, unfiltered essence of live music in Washington, DC and beyond. We don’t publish negative critiques—because every show, no matter how unconventional or chaotic, carries meaning for someone in the room. Instead, we explore what made a performance resonate: emotionally, historically, or even spiritually. Your Guide to Live Music in Washington, DC Whether you're a lifelong local or new to the DC music scene, The Aftertone is your guide to the shows that matter. As we grow, we aim to become the premier source for live music coverage in Washington, DC, celebrating the artists, venues, and communities that make this region’s sound unique.
