The Artist Mentorship Program

AMP is a Portland based 501 (c)(3) non-profit that provides a creative space for homeless youth to build healthy relationship-centered communities through music, art and cardiovascular activities. At AMP we believe that youth experiencing homelessness are resilient, creative and deserving of a dynamic support system that will nurture an environment where they can heal from trauma. AMP was founded in 1994 to connect youth experiencing homelessness to artists and musicians who provide one-on-one instruction, performance opportunities, recording studio time, gallery showcases, and most importantly, community to guide youth through the trauma of being homeless. This model of utilizing volunteer support from musician and artist communities has been a staple in how AMP has supported youth experiencing homelessness for the last 28 years. Valuing communication skills, emotional development, self-expression, skill-building, and the ability to use art and music as a resource for healing trauma is at the root of all AMP activities. At AMP, we recognize that a strong community builds support systems that help youth navigate out of homelessness. We also recognize that to build strong communities; we must utilize trauma-informed care that acknowledges and empowers underrepresented BIPOC and LGBTQ2SIA+ members in the homeless communities. AMP is supported by creative individuals from Portland’s music and art communities who volunteer their time to provide: One on one music instruction Professional recording studio Performance opportunities Live sound and recording engineering training Group jam sessions Arts and culture events (museums, gallery, concert and theater outings) Meal services (during music and art activities) Hygiene and first aid support Art lessons/workshops (Ceramic/Poetry/Photography/Film/Silk Screening/Painting) Referrals to housing, drug and alcohol treatment, and mental health support agencies Skate/Fitness Groups
