The Bead Program
Many young Nigerian single mothers face a heartbreaking reality: beyond limited access to healthcare and education, they suffer firsthand from climate change, food scarcity, and limited job opportunities, often needing to support their families alone. The BEAD (Bracelets to Empower And Develop) Program aims to help vulnerable young women achieve economic empowerment and health security by connecting their jewelry-making skills to the global economy. We strive to go beyond the band-aid solutions seen when one tries to tackle a population’s difficulties without first understanding their needs and experiences. By listening to the women, our partners in this endeavor, we developed a sustainable long-term way to provide income and make lasting change.
