The Boston Open Source Science Lab
The BOSSlab is a volunteer-powered research center that brings amateurs and PhDs together to develop low-cost & low-waste tools and techniques for "DIY" biotechnology. The BOSSlab is a 40-foot mobile biotechnology laboratory built into a standard HiCube shipping container. The lab was constructed (to national and international building codes) in 2007 by a Boston-based biotechnology company, used for one year in the Arizona desert, then sold at an auction in fall 2009 when the company filed for bankruptcy. While we locate land to host the mobile lab, we have moved our operations into a shared workshop at Sprout, a coworking space in Davis Sq, Somerville. Current objectives are to support the local DIYbio community, develop comprehensive diybio tutorials and protocols, and develop and sell synthetic biology & diybio kits.
