The Caitlin Douman Foundation, a non-profit company based in the community of Eldorado Park, whose mission is to nurture and strengthen families with special needs children by increasing their access to services. Services such as Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Play Therapy, Speech Therapy and the likes thereof. These therapies are available at all government institutions but are not as accessible to the people as they should be, bearing in mind that other explorative treatments and therapies available are far too expensive. “Cerebral Palsy” is a broad term used to describe various conditions. For example, those with quadriplegia are affected in both arms and legs; those with hemiplegia have only one side of the body affected; and those with diplegia are affected in both legs. Further, there are different types, like, spastic Cerebral Palsy which describes tight muscles, dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy which denotes spasms, and Ataxic Cerebral Palsy which describes shakiness. Although cerebral palsy is a condition that can impact any and all aspects of a person, it does not define who that person is. He or she still wants a high quality of life and parents of kids with cerebral palsy want the same for their children. Having a child with special needs changes everything: because I now know the effect raising a child with special needs has on the entire family and how hard it is to learn about and access the multitude of services needed. Cerebral Palsy is the most expensive disability any family could be faced with. OUR VISION The vision behind the foundation is to create Awareness, Education, Support and Training for the Communities, Families and the public at large with regards to a condition called Cerebral Palsy.
