Among the items the government agency measures are housing units. There are 138,539,906 in the United States.Sep 30, 2019 One reason is demographics. US population has peaked and they are becoming an aging society. Also many jobs in many areas have vanished and the residents can't sell or rent so they just abandon their homes. Many homes are foreclosures and the financial institutions can't sell them.
