The Korea Observer
The Korea Observer is an independent online newspaper based in Seoul and is providing news content for Google News as an accredited publisher. Since its inception in Feb 2013, The Korea Observer has reported news that would otherwise be ignored with the motto: “A Voice for the Voiceless.” Some notable publications include Boeing’s bribery of journalists with sexual entertainment; a Korean bar’s ban of Africans based on fears of Ebola; and the exposing the dog meat industry in South Korea to expats. It has also broken numerous stories, including human rights abuses by the Miss Asia Pacific World contest; Korea’s denial of entry to ‘pickup artist’ Julien Blanc; and an African American’s rejection for job interviews for being black in Korea. “I was really ashamed of collecting paychecks for writing pro-government articles and paid content while working for Arirang TV and the Korea Times,” Lee Tae-hoon, publisher at the Korea Observer said. James Hyams joined as the deputy managing editor late 2014 following Lee Tae-hoon’s great work. He liked the notion of providing “A Voice for the Voiceless” and thinks that The Korea Observer can be the best English news service in South Korea with time, hard work, and adhering to our ethos. The challenge for 2015 will be finding the balance between covering investigative pieces, entertainment news, expat news, human-interest stories, features, articles of significant public interest and articles of social interest to our readership.
