The Macaw Society

Since 1989, the research team now known as The Macaw Society has been leading one of the most ambitious and long-term conservation initiatives in the Peruvian Amazon. In 2020, the organization formally adopted the name The Macaw Society, reflecting more than three decades of continuous commitment to science-driven conservation. Under the direction of Donald Brightsmith and Gabriela Vigo, and in partnership with Texas A&M University, our work has produced groundbreaking insights into the ecology and protection of macaws, iconic flagship species vital to the survival of entire rainforest ecosystems. In the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve, where hundreds of macaws gather daily in one of the Amazon’s most breathtaking natural spectacles, we unite science, local communities, and international partnerships to restore habitats, improve chick survival, and empower new generations of conservationists. With over 800 volunteers and global collaborators, The Macaw Society has become a worldwide reference in wildlife research, environmental education, and biodiversity conservation. Our purpose is clear: to ensure that the vibrant flight of macaws continues to bring life and color to the skies of the Amazon for generations to come.
