The Monolith
There is an innate imbalance between supply and demand in our industry. There are thousands of bands and hundreds of websites clamouring for our attention. This growth has led to a severe lack of innovation, especially on the journalistic side; the blogosphere has devolved to a point where websites will scramble over each other to be the first to post something. In this era of social media expansion, being first has become meaningless. The standard news story is merely a repackaging of a tweet already distributed by the artist, or the recycling of a press release constructed by a PR magician. Sure, they'll pop up on Google faster, but when did journalism become a "look at me" contest? If a consumer engages with multiple websites they will encounter the same content, all with the same format and maybe even an additional smarmy opinion or comment; which, while sometimes entertaining, serve little journalistic purpose. The issue with a lot of the larger sites is that negativity sells. Audiences have become disconnected and are less likely to offer support, due to a false sense of entitlement perpetuated by this antagonism. What this industry needs is unity. There needs to be a site that labels and musicians can trust for honesty, integrity, and a passionate audience that are willing to put their time and money towards great music. That site is The Monolith.
