The Peralta Citizen

We raise the bar for student media by covering hard-hitting news related to the Peralta Community College District, a public four-college district in the East Bay, California. Our accountability work has been recognized by the Student Press Law Center, the First Amendment Coalition, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Journalism Association of Community Colleges. It's our responsibility to probe, question, and explain everything that happens at Peralta with the highest degree of accuracy. Our impact: In 2020, we brought to light that two security vendors set to provide services PCCD were not licensed to employ security guards in California, leading the district to back away from over $3 million in contracts to the unlicensed vendors. Stemming from that investigation, we filed a California Public Records Act Request for documents related to the security vendor selection process. After months of delays and incomplete answers, we filed a Public Records Act lawsuit to get answers. We dug into public records related to expensive international travel, malfunctioning elevators, campus security, and more.
