The Piney Woods School

The Piney Woods School’s mission is to provide excellence in education within a Christian community through creation of an exceptional academic model which supports the tenet that all students can learn, develop a strong work ethic, and lead extraordinary lives through academic achievement and responsible citizenship, but might not have the opportunity to do so for financial or other reasons. The largest of only four historically African-American boarding schools left in the nation, The Piney Woods School was founded in 1909. Encompassing acres, the campus includes a 500-acre instructional farm, five lakes, managed timberland, and Mississippi’s only rock garden amphitheater. Our reputation for academic excellence attracts students from all over the world. Here, the past provides a foundation for the future. From humble beginnings in an old sheep shed, the school has become the very model of a 21st century living/learning environment. Where the children of former slaves once learned to read, today we are training leaders for the new millennium. Each building tells a story in this struggle to give young people the opportunity to live extraordinary lives.
