Rex Agro, originally called Raghunath Exports Pvt. Ltd, started in the tea business in 1952 with the acquisition of 6 tea gardens in Darjeeling, under the late Mr. Raghunath Chirimar. These gardens were sold in a few years. In the 1980's, the company moved into tea export. In it got a foothold in Darjeeling (again) and Assam with the acquisition of 3 tea estates that were organic in nature. As such, the company moved into organic tea production. The new millennium brought changes to the company's "only tea" policy, with the management team expanding into the organic food market. Now, Rex Agro not only sells, produces and promotes tea, but it also does consulting, and produces and exports organic food. Furthermore, the company is now entering the hospitality and tourism industry, by opening Singtom Resort in Darjeeling. It will be a resort that not only lets customers book room nights, but also book estate tourism days.
