The Sacred Hub

The Sacred Hub (TSH), Oldham. The definition of Sacred, according to the Oxford dictionary, is something “regarded as too valuable to be interfered with; sacrosanct.” Human life is sacred and we all have the right to aspire to a better life whereby we can live and work with dignity while respecting each other, as well as the environment. These are some of the basic principles enshrined and treasured within the framework of the world religions. However, the place of religion in modern Britain has provoked different reactions and challenges and the media’s role in this is often criticised. In response to these challenges, The Sacred Hub was born. The Sacred Hub aims to transform the publics understanding and perspective about the world religions by working together on social issues, fostering good relations and challenging prejudice. Albeit historical, a significant example in which resolve was found in a society that was troubled by hate, violence, disharmony and social exclusion, is the landmark document, The Madina Charter, which established peace and pluralism through respect and acceptance - aspects that reflect some of the basic tenets of the religion of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, established and promoted. But in 21st Century Britain, the world looks very different. Religion is resurgent in many forms and with this comes new problems and opportunities. We have seen, for instance, some groups that are deeply hostile to other religions and interfaith initiatives. Our approach to interfaith is with pragmatism and open-mindedness and we aim to achieve this through our Diversity & Inclusion Charter.
