The Scraper Bike Team
The Original Scraper Bike Team is a nonprofit and a powerful cultural movement born from the streets of East Oakland, California. Founded by Tyrone “Baybe Champ” Stevenson Jr. and his cousin, Avery Pittman Sr, in the it transformed a local artistic trend—customizing bicycles—into a vital platform for youth development and social change. The Scraper Bike concept emerged from Oakland's "Hyphy" culture, mirroring the brightly-painted "Scraper" cars with their large, custom rims. Unable to afford the cars, youth began customizing bicycles instead. The Scraper Bike is instantly recognizable by its signature style: a brightly-colored, customized frame with spokes wrapped painstakingly in foil or colorful tape, transforming a standard bike into a unique piece of DIY street art. After gaining global attention from a viral 2007 music video, Stevenson formalized the project into a nonprofit organization, shifting its mission from a cultural phenomenon to a community intervention.
