The Transform Project Nigeria

The TRANSFORM “Transforming Access to Care in Slums” is a 4-year research project funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), a United Kingdom government agency that supports research into global health and social care. The project aims to help people with serious mental illness receive good quality care and treatment. The project will develop ways for traditional and faith healers, mental health professionals, primary care practitioners and community health workers (CHWs) to work together to provide the best treatment and improve the lives of people with serious mental illness and their families. PROJECT GOALS • To build and strengthen sustainable and equitable partnerships with partners in low and middle-income countries (LMICs); • To support capacity-building in global mental health research; • To develop and evaluate interventions for treatable/manageable health conditions; • To create a better understanding of factors influencing access to care; • To highlight primary benefits to the health and wealth of the poorest individuals living in ODA-eligible countries; • To develop and evaluate interventions to reduce the incidence of institutionalisation for treatable/manageable mental health conditions; • To reduce coercive care and the chaining; and locking up of people with SMDs, which is a widespread form of ‘institutionalisation’ in LMICs
