The Weaver Bird
My love for art and craft lured me into the realm of textile design. A journey which started on an experimental basis, led to the metamorphosis of a simple indigenous product. Blinds have been used for decades as a means to screen or bifurcate spaces. Blinds are made of water reeds woven together with cotton threads on a wooden hand loom. Introduction of weaves and patterns, copper and silver wires, wool and polyester, wood and bamboo, metal and glass accessories, led the path to transformation. A simple blind changed into a tactile piece of art while retaining its functionality. Table runners and placemats were designed on similar lines. Numerous designs were produced. While each piece exuded an ethnic charm, utility of product was never compromised.
