The company, Thorø Nielsen, was founded in 1945 in Herning, when Niels Kristian Thorø-Nielsen purchased a farm with an adjoining peat bog to produce peat for fuel. Later, the “THOR” briquette factory was built, using brown coal from the Søby Coal Mines – but as energy needs changed and agriculture underwent structural developments, the focus shifted from producing and exporting brown coal briquettes to focusing on the import of dolomitic lime and in 1969 the fertilizers - a business that has continued ever since, serving the Danish, Swedish, and German markets. Since 1979, the company has been run by the family’s second generation, and since 2025, the third generation has also joined the company.
