The Tobelli Film is a tobacco-based food packaging innovation functioning similarly to the household cling wrap. However, it differs as it not only stores food, but preserves it. Tobelli repurposes cellulose found in tobacco stalks in its bioplastic as 48 million kg of tobacco stalks are incinerated yearly, contributing to thousands of tonnes in air pollution. The bioplastic itself decomposes in less than a month and absorbs ethylene, extending the shelf life of food by over 2 weeks. The Tobelli Film is not just a ground-breaking innovation, it’s also an initiative for providing an equitable income source and safe working conditions for the 15 million tobacco farmers and their communities that directly depend on the tobacco cash crop.
