Torrent Networking Technologies was a gigabit router startup out of Silver Spring, Maryland founded by Dr. Hemant Kanakia from Bell Labs and funded by Columbia Capital. The company introduced a next generation routing platform called the that combined a cell-based switch fabric based on a per-flow queueing chip set from IDT (DP/DPC) with an advanced ASIC design (HULA) that allowed LPM (longest-prefix match) routing of full-internet routing tables at gigabit speeds. Torrent was acquired by Ericsson for $450M in May of and renamed Ericsson IP Infrastructure (IPI).
