Unido Industrial Decarbonization

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes inclusive and sustainable industrial development. The Energy Systems and Industrial Decarbonization Unit (part of the Energy and Climate Action Division) assists emerging and developing economies in implementing cutting-edge solutions and enabling policies for decarbonization of industrial sectors, including heavy industries. With decades of experience collaborating with governments and the private sector, we deploy country-driven solutions that unlock financing and drive sustainable development and climate action. By leveraging these insights, we inspire global efforts to accelerate industrial decarbonization. We are a leader in promoting industrial energy efficiency solutions. For more than two decades we have helped more than 25 countries enhance their energy efficiency systems, trained thousands of professionals, and accelerated the adoption of best practices in industry. UNIDO leads the Global Matchmaking Platform (GMP) to connect developing nations with the resources needed for industrial transformation. Through our flagship Net Zero Partnership for Industrial Decarbonization, we support countries with sector-specific decarbonization roadmaps, delivering policy support, and engaging stakeholders in targeted technical assistance programs. As the coordinator of the Industrial Deep Decarbonization Initiative (IDDI) and Steel Breakthrough, UNIDO brings governments, industries, and experts together to establish low-carbon standards for steel and cement, also to drive public procurement commitments, and align global industrial decarbonization efforts. Our global energy districts programme supports countries in promoting and implementing energy district projects to meet national goals on energy efficiency, climate change mitigation, and sustainable urban and industrial development.
