Usaid Harvest Activity

The USAID Harvest Activity supports male and female grain and oilseed farmers, including those from marginalized and underserved groups, to return production and income for target commodities to at least pre-war levels while improving production efficiency and profitability and will position farmers to market their crops more successfully and profitably in the war-affected context. The Activity focuses specifically on the following target commodities: barley, corn, soybean, sunflower, and wheat. Before February 2022, Ukraine was the fifth-largest wheat exporter, third largest corn and barley exporter, and top sunflower exporter (40% share) worldwide. Russia’s full-scale invasion has caused more than $40.2 billion in losses to the agriculture sector (as of a February 2023 official assessment) and loss of access to 25% of Ukraine’s land, bringing significant challenges for grain and oilseed producers. As a result, Ukrainian grain and oilseed profitability plummeted, and exports decreased for most crops, especially to key markets in Asia and Africa. Harvest will support the sector in returning to profitability while rebuilding a stronger, more inclusive sector that contributes to domestic and global food security imperatives.
