The new Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement is a landmark agreement that provides Australian businesses open access to the worlds largest market. The US economy is over 26 times the size of the Australian market. Each of the top seven US States have economies larger than the entire Australian economy. The US Department of Homeland Security alone has a FY 2005 procurement budget in excess of US$40 billion. Significant export opportunities have been created through the reduction of tariffs, the easing of market restrictions, and an obligation to provide national treatment that ensures that Australian firms will be given open access to the US$200B US government market. This means that Australian businesses can now compete in the US market, and sell to the US government on equal terms with their US competitors.
