1976 wurde der Verlag als Weismann Verlag / Frauenbuchverlag gegründet. Seit der Umfirmierung 1990 in Verlag Antje Kunstmann GmbH liegt der programmatische Schwerpunkt auf Belletristik und Sachbuch, wird aber durch illustrierte Bücher, Kinder, Jugend- und Kochbücher ergänzt. Ein kleines aber feines Hörbuchprogramm und die "Meister der Komischen Kunst" runden das Portfolio ab. Es erscheinen viele gesellschaftspolitisch relevante Bücher von deutschsprachigen wie internationalen Autorninnen und Autoren.
