The "Awakening In Jerusalem" movement first began operating in May 2008 as an independent gathering of young Jerusalemites who decided to act in the wake of the city's deteriorating state and the growing negative immigration trend of young adults from Jerusalem. The organization's objectives have been and still are to secure Jerusalem's future by means of incorporating young adults in particular and the population in general in activism and involvement, both in the social sphere and the local and national political arena. In November of 2008 the movement ran for the Jerusalem municipal elections in cooperation with the "Yerushalmim" party and in an astonishing underdog campaign gathered some votes which awarded it with 2 representatives in the city council. Today the movement's political representatives are working in cooperation with the movement's members with the aim of fulfilling the old-new vision of a sustainable pluralistic Jerusalem.
