Walk It Out

This project started as an ongoing conversation during our time in a year-long fellowship run by Youth Outside. We spent a lot of time talking about how white supremacy and patriarchy shape the outdoors and the outdoor industry, and also how much potential there was to unlearn oppressive values in nature. We both had experience working for outdoor education organizations which conducted lukewarm “diversity and inclusion” trainings that left us extremely disheartened. We wanted to see if there was a way to rewrite the narratives of backpacking and conversations on racial and social justice to actually do the work we think is valuable. We finally decided to conduct a year long project to see if this was a viable idea.
